Hello,
Arch wiki is full of well written articles.
I don't think we might be able to write it better.
If you really want to then you need the following:
- Talking arch install disc and related article
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Arch_Linux_for_the_blind
- arch beginers guide https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginners_Guide
- and also arch install guide
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Installation_Guide
I am sure all you need is written on these pages I have followed this to
the letter and am now happily running arch with gnome 3.8.
I think first you should read it all following links on the stuff you
don't understand. Then you can think how you will be installing your
arch system and finally you can follow the guides. It's avesome because
you will be able to learn a lot of stuff that will become usefull to you.
The beginners guide has a chapter on graphical interface where you can
see how to install gnome.
I recommend installing all gnome packages first it will also install orca.
After installing gnome, In order to get sound working on the login
screen create the folder /var/lib/gdm/.config/pulse if it does not
exist. Then copy the file /etc/pulse/client.conf into this folder. Then
open the file /var/lib/gdm/.config/pulse/client.conf and edit it so the
option autospawn is set to yes. You have to have a line like this in there
autospawn=yes
If you would like to make gdm start all the time your system boots up,
you can run
sudo systemctl enable gdm
If gdm has not been started automagically, You can just start gdm using
systemctl like this
sudo systemctl start gdm
after a little while the login screen should come up. In order to enable
screen reader on the login screen you can do the following:
- press the ctrl+alt+tab while the login screen is shown
- then press right arrow key once,
- then press down arrow key four times,
- then press the enter key.
This should enable the screen reader on the login screen. Next time the
login screen will appear screen reader will be started for you.
If you have got intel graphic with intel driver installed and the whole
system freezes as long as the gdm login screen appears, see
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1261308 and related arch issue.
After logging in you can press alt+f2, type in orca and hit the enter
key. Orca should come up talking. Make sure to go to the top pannel
using ctrl+alt+tab, arrow right to the accessibility, then arrow down to
the screen reader and check the screen reader menu item. This will make
orca start automagically after you login.
And that's there are no more hacks involved at this time.
Greetings
Peter
