I don't think Xemacs is accessible.  Emacs is the way to go.  Also,
Emacspeak still has enormous value since it makes it possible for Emacx to
be used with incredible efficiency by someone who uses speech.  Also, you
will come to find out, it's more than just an editor.  It's closer to being
a desktop system in its own right.  I use it a lot for authoring purposes.

I've always just used Emacs. I've always assumed XEmacs was Emacs with some
better GUI integration, but I'm just guessing. I'm on the Emacspeak list,
and I don't know of a blind person using XEmacs.

Technically you could probably use Emacs in a console with Speakup or in a
terminal with Orca, but I think you get the most power from Emacs if you use
it with Emacspeak. For example, you'll get voice fonts, auditory icons and
in general you'll hear just the information you want to hear automatically.

I use Emacspeak with eSpeak myself in Ubuntu. If you want, I can send you
the steps I use to get it all working. It's pretty easy if you're
comfortable with apt-get and using makefiles.

I just use Emacs for a bit of Python programming these days, but I used to
use it a lot for shell scripting, AWK, PERL, LISP, C, C++ and Java. 
In addition to syntax highlighting, you can use templates, folding,
automatic indentation, jump directly from compile errors to the line of code
generating the error, integration with function finding utilities and so on.
Basically, you can get yourself a pretty powerful integrated development
environment.

BTW, unless you want to talk about using Emacs with Orca, it's probably best
to take this to the Emacspeak or one of the handful of general Linux for the
blind lists out there. Here's the information I have on the Emacspeak list:
