I see your point. Doing it in Firefox will scratch the itch sooner and for
a wider user base. If it's a toss between seeing that happen in the near
future and the more comprehensive orca-based approach which sounds like it
might be quite painful and complicated to implement, I have to say do it in
firefox. Would've been neat to be able to do this in other html areas
though. How hard would it be to implement a plugin or script system in Orca
like window eyes has? For that matter, many OS products have ways to expand
their functionality via plugins. If Orca had this, people could turn it on
or off at will and people whose interests lie in these directions could
focus on writing scripts of plugins that do what they wish and the Orca
proper project can focus on some of the bigger picture issues.

Hate to say it but you pretty much prove my point. As for having to
keep up with bleeding edge of Gnome, I frankly don't see why the patch
couldn't be made to work with versions of Orca someone would encounter
in enterprise solutions of Linux.
If you do it as a Firefox solution, you can accomplish that. If you do it in
Orca, you cannot. Please see the various responses I have gotten in response
to proposing that.
