It's possible that gnome-shell got installed along with GNOME. Go into a terminal or text console and run
sudo pacman -R gnome-shell
This should solve your problem, since if gnome-shell isn't present on your system, GNOME will automatically
switch to fallback mode, which is mostly like GNOME2, and most things you're used to should work as expected.
