I never put anything after the 'git pull'. When I was pulling from
the gnome-3-0 branch, I originally cloned from the repository and used
the '-b gnome-3-0' option; after that, subsequent pulls were as I
stated above. There might be a better way to do this but this is what
I did. You might be able to merely do a checkout to the desired
branch too although I didn't think you could do that with branches
that weren't created on the local machine. But what else do I know?

It's been a while, but remember having to put a decimal point at the end. Maybe try either
$ git pull .
or
$ git pull ./
As I said, it's been a while since I worked with one of the branches, but i thin that used to work. I
never figured out how to follow the gidence in the error message for modifying the git configuration.
