Hello, everyone.
I just wanted to write and to follow up on this.
I did some poking around in /etc after I installed GNOME (which came
with PulseAudio as a dependency).
In the /etc/asound.conf configuration file, I found instructions which
were used to tell the system to use PulseAudio as default. I made a
backup copy of this file, and then issued the command:
echo > /etc/asound.conf
This cleared the asound.conf file of any content whatsoever. I rebooted
the Arch virtual machine, and lo and behold: no more garbled speech.
Speakup worked perfectly, and so did Orca in GNOME. I received a
response from Chris (the one who created the modified Arch ISO, called
TalkingArch) on the Speakup mailing list, and he said that he just
commented out everything in the asound.conf file.
I just wanted to post back here to follow up in case anyone else was
curious about this.
Take care, and Happy New Year!
