I forgot to add myself and gdm. That certainly would help. <grin> Will
try it.

Hi,
I am using gdm rather than startx. I have deleted the
.speech-dispatcher directories and still no luck. Orca defaults to
gnome-speech. I will try using startx Is there anything that
should be in the gdm directory like a reference to
/etc/profile.d/speechd.sh?
No, The insertion of the
. /etc/profile.d/speechd.sh
line in /usr/bin/orca should cover that.
Just make sure speech-dispatcher is running and that the speechd.sh
file in /etc/profile.d is marked executible. Your ability to run
spd-say should confirm that already as long as nothing is being
autospawned.
Oh, I forgot; did you add yourself (user) and gdm to the speechd
group? That step isn't done automatically.
I think I will be putting some reminder messages to this fact in the
install script.
