 Thanks Jose and Dave for all your help.  I couldn't get the script to 
bind to a keyboard shortcut, so I wrote a program in C that kills 
speech-dispatcher, restarts it and finally calls orca with the --replace 
option.  I set it as ctrl+shift+o, and all is good.  Again, thanks for 
the help and have an awesome Saturday.
