Alternatively, you can do the following, if you find the tip below is convenient:

1. Press alt+f2 and type: gconf-editor /apps/nautilus/desktop;
2. Once gconf-editor/apps/nautilus/desktop is opened, press tab twice to go to the actual list of items, and find the item trash_icon_visible;
3. Right button and then choose edite key:
4. Where it says 'value: false' (it's a toggle button), press the space bar to switch to true and then hit the ok button.
5. Close the gconf-editor. This will place the trash icon on the desktop, so you don't need to use ctrl+alt+tab to access the lower pannel.

In this particular window, you can also place shortcuts to access the home folder, network servers and the whole computer right from the desktop.
