Here is how to send to multiple recipients in thunderbird.
1. Choose to create new message (I assume you know how to do this, either through the menu or hotkeys as you don't say this is the issue).
2. When the compose window appears you will find you are in the to field, type in the main recipient.
3. To add another press enter, you will find yourself in another to field.
4. Type in the next email address.
5. Press shift+tab to move the focus to the combo box for type of recipient and select the relevant option for that recipient.
6. continue as you feel appropriate to complete your message.

NOTE: Steps 4 and 5 can be switched, which ever way you prefer to do things.
