Re: [orca-list] Braille Grade 2

I see that Luke already added this dependency! Go Luke! I love not
having to do work... This explains why a Vinux beta tester reported
that grade 2 Braille was working. Can anyone else on the Vinux list
confirm this?

Thanks,
Bill

Hi Bill
I don't know about all the major distros, but this is the case with
Ubuntu. The mistake, as Willie noticed a month or so back, is that you
must have liblouis' development libraries installed when you build Orca.
Having the main library and python bindings is not enough, and this is
the bug in Ubuntu. Liblouis-dev should be added to the gnome-orca
package's build deps. Without this package installed, Orca has no idea
where the contraction tables are located so the option for grade 2 will
appear but the translation table cannot be chosen and therefore won't
work. For a long time this would actually trigger a lot of odd behaviors
in Orca itself as well, though I believe that is fixed now. It's
actually an issue in Liblouis where the library runtime cannot be
queried for the location of the translation tables, so Orca must know at
build time where they are located. The liblouis development files
provide this information.

I've been told that Orca supports Braille Grade 2, but that for some
reason the versions of Orca that ship with all the major distros do
not.  Is this true?  If so, should we enable it?  How would that be
done?

Thanks,
Bill
