Perhaps the issues are related, but I'm not getting any segfaults  
here. Speech doesn't stop completely, it's as though orca inserted a  
pause and just forgets to resume after it pauses. I'm not sure if  
that's what's happening--I doubt it, sense different drivers are  
introducing different pause points--but that's the best way I can  
think of to describe it. The rest of the phrase doesn't speak, but  
speech itself is still running, and nothing has locked or crashed. I'm  
not getting it with speechd-up at all, but speechd-up never tries to  
pause speech so perhaps that's not surprising.

thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot  
possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to  
get at or repair.
