Re: [orca-list] Using Orca on NetBook Computers

Hi,

I see plenty of folks are in the same place as I.

There is a custom Ubuntu distribution for the EEE PC called EEEubuntu (I will find the link if you like)

I have also downloaded a distribution which comes with orca talking out of the box. It's been a while since I have hacked linux distributions, but I suspect I can merge the two given time.

Losing Windows on the EEE will be no loss at all.

Best,

Joel

I am considering getting a small, NetBook computer running Linux for
times when we are traveling or on vacation.

My questions are:

1. If I purchase something like an Asus EEE PC running Linux, will I be
able to load and run Orca on it in order to make it accessible to me?
The original linux distro doesn't work on asus machine. They use Xandros and I think they are using KDE desktop. Not sure cause I installed ubuntu on my.>
2. If so, is there a pointer to someplace that can describe how to load
and configure Orca on such a PC?
dont know with KDE but I don't think you can run orca on it.>
3. Alternately, is it possible or should I consider loading a particular
type of Linux on such a PC?
I installed ubuntu intrepid on my machine and then installed the modified kernel from www.array.org. Work wonderfull. And if you also install eee control from same repository yu can switch on and off w lan, camera, touchpad and cardreader and also adjust the power saving. >

this be done from a memory card with an ISO of Linux on it?
the machine can boot from usb-stick and you can install from that.

5. Is there another option which I missed here that might be a better
alternative?
Maybe msi wind u100 is a good machine but I don't know if there is a linux variant of them.

They are popular among the blind comunity.>
I was quite taken with a $200 Asus machine running Linux which I saw
today – 2.2 pounds, 4 GB memory – and thought it might be a good
traveling companion rather than lugging around a 7 pound laptop plus
power supply.
