Hi,
One thing that you can try is create in your home directore a file called .pulse_a11y_nostart.

Try the following steps:
1) Press alt+f2 and type gnome-terminal
2) type the following command:
touch ~/.pulse_a11y_nostart
3) Reboot your computer typing:
sudo reboot

You'll asked for the root password

I've just installed ubuntu 9.04 and ran the update manager. However, after doing this, orca nolonger works. I can't tell what it's saying, i just get a horrible crackling sound.
