Re: [orca-list] Nokia N800/N810

Hi their. I'm CC-ing Orca so that others who this may pertain too or have
interest in this can respond.
The EEE PC runs Debian perfectly. True, it is probably cheaper than the
N810/N800, but we don't know what the final price of the new Internet
tablet will be. Also, what if the net book may not be desirable in
certain situations? Its about giving people choice and freedom to use
what device people may want to use to access the Internet and whatever
network resources--whether they be local or remote. Plus, you have to
admit that its a small device and has a lot of capabilities.

Except for the truly small size, would a blind user find more use from a device like this or from a net
book? The 810 will run about $400 for a basic model while a net book can be $350.
On that point, has anyone tried gnome/orca on an Atom based net book yet? I am interested in how they
perform for accessibility use.

Hello all. Recently I've noticed that their is indeed a port of Debian for these devices--a lot of the
packages available in Sid/Testing are
available. Their was a demonstration of Iceweasel running on the device,
as well as Openoffice.org on Youtube. Reason why I bring this up is that if Gnome could run on this
device, the blind may have a low-cost device to access the Internet which is pretty capable. Nokia is,
however developing a new device which will increase the CPU speed though--complains of those who ran Debian
were that the device ran very slowly but this might or might not be a problem after the new device is
released. I am willing to commit time and energy to make this a reality, however I do not have one to use.
When installing Debian, you do have access to openssh-server as well as whatever is ported or in the
arch's particular repository. I'd be interested to know what you're thoughts are on this though..
