Rich, I can not comment about the problem related to VMWare.
However I had a problem similar to what you are describing related to 
orca's preferences. When I tried to start  orca prefs by pressing 
OrcaKey+spaceBar,I didn't receive the preferences screen.
This problem happened  after I had installed festival. Removing festival 
removed the problem too.
I don't know if this helps.
