Yes, just do a './autogen.sh gail' or './autogen.sh --prefix=/usr'
depending on where you want to install these things.  Library and
program placement are critical here.  I got some messed up libraries a
while back once and stuff wasn't working right.  I personally put
these in over /usr to overwrite the components pre-installed by my
dropline-gnome mini distro.  Also, I don't think this would be your
situation but I also encountered a conflict between Slackware 12's
installation of glib2 and what dropline-gnome attempted to replace.
The symbolic link wasn't right; I had to fix that and then that
problem cleared up.  I don't think that's your problem if you're using
another distro like Debian or Ubuntu.

Otherwise, all four packages built fine for me from svn updated
source.
