Hi Krister,
don't know what happens to Hardy, but you can start brltty with an Alva 
display as follows:
In a text console type:
sudo brltty -b al
Additional parameters depend on the type of connection:
-d ttyS0 for com1.
-d usb: for USB
-d ttyUSB0 for USB2serial.
Note: The braille driver should be detected automatically and also the 
USB connection (not USB2serial).
You can use the -t parameter to add your appropriate braille table, I 
don't know the initials for Swedish.
But In general: Why did you update in such an early state of 
development? There may be serious bugs, so that neither brltty nor Orca 
will work. Think of switching back to Gutsy.
