Hi Steve:

The GNOME screen saver does indeed present a challenge.  There's a long 
history into the exploration of the problems at this bug:

The work is maybe a little bit beyond our grasp, but we try to prod the 
team from time to time on this bug to see if they can provide a fix.  I 
think voices from the community may also help give this bug some attention.
