Re: [orca-list] Emailing: msg00005.htm

To use TTSynth with Orca on Debian/Ubuntu, you probably need to compile
gnome-speech from source in order to get the correct gnome-speech
drivers. They'll be called either gnome-speech-ibmtts, or
gnome-speech-viavoice, I'm not sure because I don't have Debian or
Ubuntu here.

Once you've compiled and installed your gnome-speech, run test-speech
from the console to test that your build talks through TTSynth, though
it still won't be called that.

Meanwhile, the easiest way to test that your TTSynth is correctly
installed and working is to compile the ttsynth_say application and
issue a test command something like:

ttsynth_say hello

PS: Yes, someone needs to build and offer .deb packages of gnome-speech
with support for this voice, and that has been mentioned here before,
but I'm not aware it's actually the fact yet.

All,
I'm learning how to use gnome through orca and espeak on a ubuntu 7.04
system. I'd like to be able to read Chinese text, so I purchased
ttsynth. I downloaded the .deb package and ran dpkg --install on it.
I was prompted for my license key and got no errors. Files were
installed under /opt/IBM/ibmtts. I'm not sure where to go from here to
enable orca to use ttsynth. I'm not given a choice for ttsynth when I
go to set orca preferences. The README talks about a ttsynth directory
which I don't seem to have.
Thanks for any help.

Hello Janina, does this now install and work correctly with the default
libraries installed on ubuntu?

Yes, though you may need additional pieces. For instance, I don't
believe gnome-speech-ibmtts is available from Ubuntu repositories by
default.

We will be providing rpm and deb packages for gnome-speech-ibmtts,
speech-dispatcher, speakup-connector, etc., over the next few days via
our web site, and eventually via our repositories at
SpeakupModified.Org, but only a very few package files are there as of
this moment. However, all the sources are available either from us or at
default locations.
