Re: [orca-list] sound on feisty

Repeating myself somewhat--I don't believe Gnome is the place to solve
this. It would be as if Gnome used one set of video drivers, while KDE
used a different set, etc. Or perhaps Gnome had one printer driver set,
while KDE another, and the console yet another.

All right! Glad to hear this. It was a fun hack to try.

Now, for ALSA vs. ESD vs. whatever. I don't know. I'm trying to read
up on them to get a better understanding of things. Does anyone have an
idea where GNOME is headed with this? I still see signs of ESD in
various places.

Hello,
I have just tried something similar to what Will suggested with the
gnome-speech bonobo activation file. The difference is that instead of
using esddsp, I used aoss, so the string in the quote marks after the
location= is
"/usr/bin/aoss /usr/bin/espeak-synthesis-driver"
and now I am happily using espeak with alsa with the gnome-speech
driver.

As another note, I tried to use another app through aoss, and the two
worked together with no problem, speech and sound. That's me happy. Has
anyone else tried this, and how does it work for you?

I would guess as this works, esddsp should work as well, but I decided
against it as it is another server layer which may stop running
(potentially).
