How will I know if it is the en-gb locale? I set ubuntu's country option
to UK (or whatever it actually said (eg. Great Britain)). I have updated
orca to the current SVN trunk since installation. How can I find out?

Replace:
__chnames["#"] = _("pound")
with:
__chnames["#"] = _("hash")
and then reinstall Orca.
Maybe that's something that should be done for the UK English localization
(um, localisation). Maybe it should be a general change...
Having thought about it a little more...
Michael, are you using Orca with the en_GB locale?
If so, the actual change will need to go in the .../orca/po/en_GB.po
file at around line 181.
msgstr "hash"
