Hi Kenny,
A fix went into Gnome-speech head a few weeks ago that should noticeably
improve this situation. If you haven't done so recently, You might try
pulling gnome-speech from cvs as a first step.

Orca DECtalk stability on Linux
Hi.
I've noticed that DECtalk 4.64 seems to cause orca to crash much more
often than if I use the festival driver. I would like to know if anyone
else running the Li nux version is having the same problem?
I'm running the latest Ubuntu Edgy.
Kenny
