Re: Orca testing...

hi Will,

Remember you had tried to help me. I was the one using FC3 and you
had mentioned that you hadn't had any luck with that. I had compiled
it, but never got it to speak. it kept telling me I had no orca.orca
directory in my home directory, which was true, and when I did a
command I think it was "setup orca" or something similar, it gave me
nasty errors. I didn't proced from there. Although I might be lying,
because you had mentioned starting python and doing something there,
which I can't recall. Taht however didn't work for me. I had the
speech driver installed because I got gnopernicus working which was
how I used the console. Don't mind if I ask you a few things...

You say orca does pretty good with most gtk aps. Which are some of
the most accessible ones. I hear gaim is really nice. Will I be able
to use open office with it, although that is ot a gtk ap...
As far as speech goes, how does it sound, and is it enjoyable? I'm
so used to jaws for windows (yes sad to say I'm still using it) but I
really enjoy it. That is why I asked if there was eloquence for orca
or linux in general, because I like listening to that voice.

When FC5 is released, I don't see why it wouldn't work, although I
might try gnopernicus 1.0. I realize that orca is still a project at
work, but I still want to keep up on it. I was kind of really wishing
for a jaws for linux type ap, but I'll take what I can get... I'm also
starting to learn a bit of python so I might contribute to the
scripting pile, but maybe not for a while.

Hey Cody:

Orca does pretty well with many GTK+ applications. If you can
provide more details about what you couldn't get working (and what
you tried), we might be able to help you get going with it.

hey will,
I do not have the elequence sdk, but will do some googling for it.
Fedora 5 should be great, I am tempted to download and run the
prebeta, but I don't want to spoil it. I'll play around with it. Can
orca read like menus, icon folder views, etc? I couldn't get it to
ever work for me.

Hey Cody:

I'm not a Fedora Core 5 beta tester or user, so I'm not sure. We've
been developing Orca on Solaris and Ubuntu lately and are having
relatively good success with the GNOME 2.14 bits, which I believe
will be making their way into the soon-to-be-released updates of
Ubuntu and Fedora.

Orca can currently talk to emacspeak and gnome-speech drivers for
speech. I know there is an eloquence driver for gnome-speech, but I
don't have the eloquence SDK, so I've never been able to verify that
the eloquence driver works or not. If you have the eloquence SDK and
are willing to hack, you might try building gnome-speech with the
eloquence driver and then checking to see if it actually works using
the gnome-speech /usr/bin/test-speech application. If the eloquence
driver works, then it should work fine with Orca.

Please remember that Orca is still pre-beta. We have a lot of work
to do with it, including the development of a configuration GUI to
make it easier to set the various settable parameters, including
selection of the speech system.

Hope this helps,

Will
