history of ORBIT2_INTERNAL_API ?

Hi,

I saw the macro "ORBIT2_INTERNAL_API" used heavily in the orbit2 code base, and it looks like that macro is always defined in Makefile. So I am curious about why it was used initially ? Did anyone know a bit of its history ?
