options/restrictions to transfer 8bit/16bit chars

Hi List,
are there any restrictions/compiler options to transfer 8bit/16bit charsets?
We try to transfer data from an informix database to a sybase
database via orbit-jaguar (jaguar=sybaseORB) and it seems that
there are transferred just 7bit of the chars.
We tried to code it to utf8 before transferring, but that had no effect.
Any hints?
