Right now I'm actually looking at the IM stack (Empathy).  I think providing generic storage is still a good goal, but it's not trivial if we want to support encrypted data.

In the shorter term the account system that Marina is working on should make it easier for applications to store credentials for web sites like box.net, which should help.
