Re: GNOME Partnership with Mozilla Campus Clubs

Hi Meg,

I would defnitely be interested in hearing more about the types of mentorship models they have identified and participating in a call around this initiative. Let me know when it's time to schedule the call,

Hi Bastian,

The Mozilla team has been a little behind schedule. I had a meeting ta few weeks ago with Christos Bacharakis from Mozilla. He recently returned from running practice workshops on the East Coast of the US. Mozilla has a grant to study mentorship models and building sustainable open source campus groups, and they have been preparing a detailed report with their researcher.

I am currently waiting for Christos will be sending me information about the various types of mentorship models they've identified so we can compare them to the way mentorship works in our community. He's also planning to reach out to some club leaders and find out who is interested in using our activities. After I've heard from him, we'll schedule a call to discuss that and decide how mentors from GNOME can work with the campus groups. If any of you are interested in being part of the call, please let me know! They have just launched their new website [0], and when we spoke Christos said he would review and add the four GNOME activities I "ported" from the Newcomer's guide. I'll follow up with him again this week and see when he'll have time to move forward.

When I was in Berlin I talked to Neil and Nuritzi about making an announcement about the initiative, but Christos has asked that we hold off until things are a little further along on their side. For the initial launch they are only working with ten clubs (they are listed on the website). After the initial launch is complete we can work with our community to start clubs in other schools, etc. The idea is to start small in order to find the best ways to build sustainable clubs, and then expand from there.

Let me know if you're interested in being part of the next call, and I will follow up when I have more information about the mentorship models!

Thanks,
Meg

Hi Meg,

I'd be interested in hearing what the status is on this initiative? Are there any additional action items from the GNOME side of things we need to look at to get this going?

Hello Meg,

Sounds like a great initiative!
This list is mostly for students, where some mentors are subscribed. I recommend contacting mentors individually and check their availability once you know the ideal requirements of Mozilla.

Hi,

As some of you know, I have been working on a partnership between the Mozilla community and GNOME in order to grow our campus outreach initiatives. Mozilla has an initiative called Mozilla Campus Clubs [0]. At the end of September they will be running a pilot program on ~20 campuses in the United States. The goal of the program is to get students involved in Open Source.

Since our community is interes ted in expanding outreach to students, this is a gr eat opportunity for us to work with existing student groups who want to learn to contribute to GNOME. Mozilla's platform provides us with templates so we can easily structure activities for students to use during their events. So far I have adapted the first two steps of the Newcomers Guide into two activities [1][2]. I'm planning to finish the rest of the activities next weekend. If anyone has feedback I would appreciate it!

I'm hoping that all of the mentors listed in the Newcomer's Guide will be willing to work with the students who are solving bugs as part of a Campus Clubs activity. I sent an email tonight to get detailed information from the Campus Clubs devs about what they expect from mentors in terms of availability to answer questions, etc. Should I reach out to the mentors individually, or is sending this email (and following up with more info before the start of the program) enough? Please let me know.

Thanks,
Meg
