My student team would like to take on bug 568213.
We're required to contribute to an open source project for a college

What is the general procedure for taking ownership of a bug with
intentions of creating a patch?

In this case it should be plenty sufficient to comment on the bug,
expressing your intention to provide a patch.

Adding some detail like expected dates doesn't hurt. Also, you can add
some implementation specifics and infrequent status updates there.

However, please do keep in mind that bugzilla is not a good place for
discussion or questions. These should better be directed to the
project's mailing list or IRC channel. You can talk to the developers
and other interested parties there.

Enjoy the experience!
