Yes, logical. Too bad developer.gnome.org does more

Perhaps a rewrite of developer.gnome.org. :-)

Does the gnome website need help with this sort of
thing?

So, it sounds like you didn't install any of the
development libraries
on your distro (in particular, libglade, known as
'libglade2-dev' on
my system). I guess I could try to add instructions
for this
somewhere, but it's different for every distro and
so I just assumed
people would install the development libraries
themselves. Thanks for
pointing out that I need to at least mention this.

Yup, I don't have those libraries.
I figured those pages were out of my depth but I
thought I would give it a try anyway :)

Oops, not only did the wiki page you refer to forget
to mention that,
but I also forgot it in my guide...

Thanks for updating it :)
However, $WHOAMI doesn't seem to do anything on my
distro. I assume it's an environment variable? I think
even newbies will understand something like
'username'.

I created the folder & it worked properly.
(Though
it
does a HUGE amount of stuff... the guide could
perhaps
warn that this is going to happen.)

Well the point of the bootstrap is to install about
10 different
programs to make sure you have all the appropriate
build tools and new
enough versions of the programs, so yes.

I've edit the wiki page to mention this. It's best to
warn users that a command will produce a lot of output
& take a long time. It prevents 'oh no I've broken
everything!' panic. :)

<snip>
I fixed this problem and tried again:

joachim@ubuntu:~$ jhbuild sanitycheck
automake-1.7 not found
automake-1.8 not found
automake-1.9 not found

Did you repeat the 'jhbuild bootstrap' after fixing
up your install
prefix so that you could write to it?

I hadn't, but I have now. This is the end of my output
(there's a lot of it but I think it's all relevant):

I'm not sure what to do at this point.
