btw, "keyfile" plugin is always used by NetworkManager and it writes to
the "/etc/NetworkManager/system-connections" directory. It's the same
thing.

Yeah, symlinking works, or on recent NM you could configure

    [keyfile]
    path=/var/lib/NetworkManager/system-connections
