Ah, that's not quite verbose enough actually. One thing to note is that
MM is autospawned by dbus when required, so you want to make sure the
existing process is terminated:
a) mv /usr/sbin/modem-manager /
b) killall -TERM modem-manager
c) /modem-manager --debug
d) insert your modem, try to connect
