^^^ this looks like ModemManager crashed, actually.  Are you able to get
crashlogs from apport about it at all?  Alternatively you can:

1) stop NM
2) killall -TERM modem-manager
3) gdb modem-manager
4) r --debug
5) start NM in another terminal
6) when ModemManager crashes, type "backtrace" to get the backtrace

This looks fine; I assume this output is from the test program you
referenced above.  Instead, we'd need to find out why modem-manager is
crashing when it's being run with NM.
