Building from source and installing on Ubuntu 8.10

I keep having problems where network manager is asking for WEP key, even when in keyring, and when it does not ask for WEP key it takes a really long time to connect to wifi after resume.  Thus I wanted to install the latest version from source. I downloaded the source and have built the source and then ran through "sudo make install." However I am unsure how to determine if it installed correctly or not and if not how to force install.
