Many thanks Dan,
I checked Network control panel and eth0 had been set to roaming, so that could not have been the problem.
Removing eth0 settings from the /etc/network/interfaces file did do the trick. I do recall setting a static IP address during install. This was a work windows domain IP address. Worked a treat, but not useful anymore. If I need to set it again then I shall use network manager!
I have now stopped sweating. I am very very grateful.
I'm off to the ubuntu forum to update my thread. There were a few other people with the sme problem, but no joy. This should change that.
Again, many thanks
Regards
Lucas

Here's the problem:
- Device: eth0 ----------------------------------------------------------------
Type: Wired
Driver: e1000e
State: unmanaged
The "unmanaged" state means that you (or when you installed, the
installer) directed NetworkManager to completely ignore this device.
Try removing anything relating to "eth0" from
your /etc/network/interfaces file, and restart. Or (if things haven't
changed too much in 8.10) you can set the device to "Roaming" mode in
the network control panel. let us know how it goes!
