It's honoured already, isn't it (current Intrepid)?

See, the default gateway is still the original eth0.
Honestly, VPN (PPTP) is working rather well - so long as there is an
interface driven by NM. If there is none (because I have set up the
bridging in /etc/network/interfaces) then NM is 'dead'.
