netmanager problems with ubuntu 8.04

the tale starts with a wifi incompatability (3945ABG) and takes many twists and 
turns but ends up with me trying networkmanager 0.7.  must say that with 
backported modules, wifi works great again.  I am most grateful.  but... openvpn 
is not working.  I just find the message in syslog:

after vpn configurations -> configure vpn -> +add -> create vpn connection -> 
forward (twice) and error 6.

google didn't yield any useful results.  ideas on what I should try?
