You can usually find this out by looking at dmesg's output when you turn off 
the wireless function, using nm-applet or knetworkmanager:

Mar  7 15:23:52 [kernel] bcm43xx: set security called, .level = 0, .enabled = 
0, .encrypt = 0
Mar  7 15:23:52 [kernel] bcm43xx: Radio turned off
