very slow update of available networks

Hi all!

I run NetworkManager 0.6.3 with Ubuntu 6.10 and a madwifi-card. I have
the trouble that NetworkManager seems to update its list of available
networks *very* slow - sometimes it takes 10 minutes until a new
network appears, although e.g. "iwlist ath0 scanning" shows it at one
- can I speed up the information transfer somehow or isn't this
supposed to be like this?
