What version of Gtk+ are you running? What distribution? nm-applet will
use the new GtkStatusIcon widget for the tray icon if its available,
otherwise it reverts to the eggtrayicon (a compile time determination).
Do you know what version of pidgin this might have been fixed in? We've
had a number of problems with eggtrayicon in pidgin that we've had to
try and work around (a few we haven't been able to work around). If you
can figure out roughly what version of pidgin this might have been fixed
in, I could probably isolate what changes might have fixed it and see if
there is a similar problem in nm-applet.
