In NetworkManager SVN, the _only_ code that sets the hostname explicitly
is in src/backends/NetworkManagerSuSE.c.  NetworkManagerGentoo.c does
not.  Maybe your distro patches NM, but that's a problem for your distro
then.

NM is certainly not a Red Hat specific project; it just happens that I'm
employed by Red Hat and people from RH have put the most work into it so
far; but Novell has contributed quite a lot, as have people from other
distributions/companies.
