Hello All!
On some (bad) network-sockets/cables forcing it down from
gigabit/100mbit to 10 mbit when no RX comes in will allow you to still
connect through them. Switching with MII tool when there is a link up
without anything (usefull) comming through would definitely increase the
number of situations of successful "plug-and-play".
I understand that it would add another dependency (to net-tools under
Debian based systems), but it's only a very small extra dependency and a
drastic improvement to the tool: it will fulfill its goal - connecting
you to a network - in more situations.
This would do the trick:
*test link RX* on false:
/sbin/mii-tool -F 10baseT-FD $IFACE # force to 10 mbit
*test link RX* on false:
/sbin/mii-tool -r # restore it to normal negotiation
