Don't take my word for this, but looking at the list archives it seems
this issue is fixed in CVS.  The CVS NetworkManager will first try to
find an open network it knows how to join, and if that fails, it'll
try all the recorded networks one by one.  That will make it find your
hidden network.

On a quick sidenote, disabling ssid broadcast is an artificial
protection measure at best, as any half-decent scanning tool can pick
up hidden ssid networks trivially, and pick up the "hidden" ssid as
well if there is a host associated with the access point.  Perhaps you
could reenable ssid broadcasts, and trade a bit of
security-by-obscurity for ease of use? (not neglecting strong
encryption on the AP, obviously)
