Just to follow on to my own post,
I finally enabled scanning with my card:
====================================
[tim martha ~]$ dmesg | grep orinoco
orinoco 0.15rc1STA (David Gibson <hermes gibson dropbear id au>,
Pavel Roskin <proski gnu org>, et al)
orinoco_cs 0.15rc1STA (David Gibson <hermes gibson dropbear id au>,
Pavel Roskin <proski gnu org>, et al)
[tim martha ~]$ sudo iwlist eth0 scanning
eth0 Scan completed :
Cell 01 - Address: 02:02:2D:4A:52:80
ESSID:"maths.tcd.ie"
Mode:Ad-Hoc
Frequency:2.457 GHz (Channel 10)
Channel:10
Quality:32/92 Signal level:-62 dBm Noise level:-94 dBm
Encryption key:off
====================================
I'm not sure what caused the improvement -
I re-installed the firmware, and re-compiled the latest CVS orinoco code,
but both seemed the same as before.
Probably I made a silly mistake earlier.
Tomorrow I will go to my local free hotspot,
and try NetworManager!
Thanks for all the advice.
