Ok, I'll take a look at it tomorrow and try to work it out with David 
Zeuthen (HAL author).  For reference, I have:

FC3 kernel 2.6.10-1.741smp
Intel Corp. 82545EM Gigabit Ethernet Controller (Copper) (rev 01)
hal 0.4.7-1.FC3
dbus 0.22-10
No wireless (though I could put a PCI card in)
