Problems with ipw2100 and shared key authentication

Hi,

I'm having trouble getting NetworkManager to bring up the wireless
interface on my Centrino laptop. It works fine with system-config-
network, but I'd obviously like to avoid this.

Here's my configuration:
- AP: shared key authentication, 128bit WEP
- Card: IPW2100, using the ipw2100-0.56 driver
- NM: latest rawhide (NetworkManager-0.3.1-1)

The ipw2100 module loads fine. When I start NetworkManager, the
following gets logged:

Oct 27 22:09:38 serenity NetworkManager: Setting network parameters:
succeeded
Oct 27 22:09:38 serenity NetworkManager: starting...
Oct 27 22:09:39 serenity NetworkManager:

(is_enc=0 && (!source=1 || !len_source=0)))
... (last 3 lines repeated indefinitely) ...

Also, the NetworkManagerInfo applet does not get started, even if I log
out and back in again. If I start it manually, it shows two wireless
networks -- a neighbor's and mine, the latter shown with an ESSID of
"<hidden>". By selecting "<hidden>" I get a gconf error because of the
invalid characters. Choosing a custom network by specifying my actual
ESSID gives me an error (sth. like "not in range").

It seems that NM is trying to connect to my neighbours AP (which is
listed first in iwlist scan). Is there any way I can filter it out?
Also, how can I convince NM to pick up my AP (is this a problem with how
ipw2100 handles hidden ESSIDs)?

Thanks,
