Hi,

The testsuite is broken, test fails and tests hang.

Attached is a patch that:

1. fix some failure due to non test exceptions

2. fix hangs by ensuring that we actually terminate properly, either
with a timeout or by catching exceptions where appropriate.

This is just part 1, I'm working on actually fixing the tests.
