Nautilus Search

I am absolutely shocked to find that when Nautilus is asked to search 
for files, if there are no matches in the current folder it stops looking.

What good is a search function that stops at the current folder?  Isn't 
the whole point of a search function to locate files when you don't know 
their location?  The search function in Nautilus is about as useful as 
herpes.
