I'm very cautious about this. It seems unlikely that a few extra cycles
calling a function like this will affect things much compared to the i/o
it does. Probably a function of the profile not showing the time spent
in i/o.
Also, this is some *very* core code. Any change here can have
catastrophic consequences all over the place.

This sounds like the "files in /usr/lib has no extensions, all files are
sniffed for mimetype" issue.
