I progressed some more
I had in my code an == (comparison) instead of an = (assignment)
for assigning the result of the call to nautilus_metafile_get_list.
Now, with the proper assignment operator,
I get a more consistent result:
maximum length of list : 0
length of list : 0
even after a sleep(5) 
(and while the nautilus window displays the emblems).
I further added a call to nautilus_metafile_is_read
which returns consistently 0

beginning to be really stuck
